JPG (Joint Photographic Experts Group)

JPEG (or abbreviated as JPG, .jpg) is one of the most popular image formats. JPEG is a raster format, that is, an image is formed from individual pixels. The format has gained popularity thanks to a special compression technology, which allows reducing its size (space occupied on the disk). With this algorithm in the latest versions of the jpeg format, users can independently determine the degree of compression and so the quality of the image.

This format is popular both online and offline. The small size of the JPG file allows you to reduce the weight of web pages, their download speed and the use of resources.

However, not all tasks are suitable for JPEG. For example, if you are planning to work on editing graphics, the image quality may decrease in the process. To do this, it is preferable to first convert your JPEG file to a more responsive format, such as PNG.

PNG (Portable Network Graphics)

PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is another raster graphic format that was developed as a free and open-source alternative to the GIF format. Compared to its predecessor, PNG has been greatly improved. In particular, the number of supported colors has been increased to 16 million colors (in the latest version). From this point of view, this is the optimal image format, combining high quality and relatively low file size.

In addition, unlike other popular competitors, png images may have a transparent background. Because of this, one of its popular applications is web graphics — various logos and icons on websites.

Although PNG itself does not support animated graphics, unlike its prototype, there is a version of PNG that supports moving images - APNG.
